It appears that Kenny Williams is still making moves to
provide White Sox skipper, Robin Ventura, with the best possible team for the
start of spring training. Dan Johnson,
former Tampa Bay Ray has just signed a minor league deal with the White Sox. Johnson will also appear at spring training
in Glendale, AZ later this month.
Johnson has become famous in recent years for his clutch performances
that have helped lead the Rays to the playoffs.
He has not always been the biggest contributor to the Rays lineup but
when he’s called to the plate in all or nothing situations, he seems to
deliver. Most recently in 2011, Johnson
pinch-hit against the Yankees in the final game of the regular season. With the Rays trailing, and their playoff
hopes on the line, Johnson was at the plate with two strikes. He hit a drive that tied the game, and
eventually lead to a Ray victory in the game and in the wild card race.
By acquiring Johnson, Williams is hoping to have a new
player to provide the Sox with a much needed clutch hitter. We have not had a player who has been able
to deliver in clutch situations since Joe Crede. Johnson will need to prove himself in order to
earn a spot on the roster, which will be quite difficult, as injuries have
plagued him in the past. If he can stay healthy
and play to his fullest potential, it is likely Johnson will see some playing
time in the big leagues before the season is over.
