Well, it happened once again. I know this post is a day late, but the topic
is certainly worth discussing. April 21,
2012, Philip Humber threw a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox. The Seattle Mariners went 27 up, 27 down in
nine innings to contribute to the perfect game in Seattle. Humber is the first to throw a perfect game
in almost two years, and the first for the Chicago White Sox since Mark Buehrle
on July 23, 2009. Although perfect
games seem to be occurring more often in recent years, they are still extremely
rare. It is a very difficult task and involves
a lot of hard work, concentration, and sometimes luck. Humber was not expected to pitch this well,
but he certainly proved that his tommy john surgery from a few years back was
successful. In a recent article on
whitesox.com by Josh Liebeskind titled “Humber still trying to process
perfection” Humber says he was overwhelmed by the amount of support he was
shown following the completion of the game.
He stated that he had nearly 100 congratulatory text messages that he
responded to. Humber also stated that he
received a message from former teammate and fellow perfect game pitcher, Mark
Buehrle. Humber said that he is likely
to contact Buehrle as to what he should keep from the game and what he should
send to Cooperstown. A perfect game does
not occur very often, and fans in Seattle were well aware. The amount of Mariners fans that stayed and
cheered for Humber was incredible and a real class act.
