Once again, The White Sox have decided to name first baseman
Paul Konerko as team captain. Konerko is
a leader among his teammates and strives to set an outstanding example for
other players and fans. Prior to the
signing of Robin Ventura as the White Sox manager, Konerko was considered for
the player manager position. Konerko is
certainly an individual capable of leading a team while also holding an active
roster spot.
As opposed to many professional athletes, Konerko is calm
and level headed. It is not very often
that Konerko is seen arguing with an umpire or throwing fists at opposing
teams. And although his beliefs of the
game of baseball may be similar to Ozzie Guillen’s, Paul would bring an
entirely different type of management to Chicago. Konerko recently said “this can be a very
successful year without making the playoffs.”
This may seem a bit strange for someone who was considered for a
baseball manager position, but in reality Konerko is correct. Kenny Williams is attempting to rebuild or restructure
the White Sox organization in hopes of having a playoff contending team in the
future. If the Sox make the playoffs
this year, great, if they don’t, there’s always next year.
Although his position as team captain does not give him the
same responsibilities as a player manager would, Konerko is still trusted to
lead by example for all his teammates and fans.
It seems as if Konerko has already started his path to his next career,
MLB manager.
